Gabor Balogh continues his march to the HOS by turning a rare hat trick: knockdown, point deduction AND a DQ all in the very first round of loss #43 (and of course a shout goes out to 25-2 Attila Kovacs for taking a fight like this in the first place).

Result from Slovakia's final show of 2008: A second loss to Stefan Berza in four months. Berza may have sabotaged his own HOS chances with those two outcomes alone, but on the bright side of things, this could be the dawn of something special for the 18-year old, 7 losses-in 3 countries-in 8 months Mr. Nemeth. Although he's probably not related to this gent, they're still a pair to watch, especially in light of Attila's performance last February 3rd.

Also in 2008: Cristian Nicolae probably punched his ticket to the HOS (barring too many more screw-ups like the one in February).

Faces in the Crowd, Part II: South American Edition

Cristian Zamudio, Argentina. 0-11 with 11 KO losses, from super middleweight to heavyweight. In the tradition of Perfecto Gonzalez, he once posed as Edson Nascimento (not the 47-0-1 bumkilling great, but a lower-budget 7-2-1 version) for a fight against 21-1 Gonzalo Omar Basile.

Victor Luis Britos Samudio, Paraguay. 0-32-1 with most of the losses by KO. In the tradition of Cristian Zamudio, he once posed as 3-15 Aurelio Dos Santos (whom Samudio had been KO'd twice by earlier in his career) for a fight against Gonzalo Omar Basile, as though that constituted a significant upgrade in opposition. Also appears to manage a pair of other fighters who, disappointingly, sport winning records.

Juan Carlos Gimenez Ferreyra, Paraguay. 46-year old (at least) national cruiserweight champion, who captured the belt with a win over 47-year old, 1-19 Juan Hipolito Hellmann Rivas (nickname: "Mayonesa"). Mayonesa's win came against none other than ... Victor Luis Britos Samudio.

Arnaldo Elias Romero Orrabalis, Paraguay. 1-22-2 with four losses apiece to Erich Ramon Sanabria Franco and Felix Roque Nunez Barrientos, and six losses to Feliciano Dario Azuaga Ledezma -- with a seventh bout between the two scheduled for this Friday. His win came against ...

Basilio Pedro Morel Mendiola, Paraguay. 0-16 with all of the losses coming within four rounds, including the above-mentioned loss (via KO1) to Romero Orrabalis in a Paraguayan 108-lb. title bout. Following this defeat he was KO'd in two by Sixto Vera Espinola, and in his next fight, two years later, he was KO'd in three, again by Espinosa, this time in an equally well-deserved bid for the Paraguayan 105-lb. title.

Alfredo Ramon Comaschi, Argentina. Came back from a near-20 year layoff in underwhelming fashion in 2003, by drawing with 1-19-4 Juan Carlos Chapana.

Flavio Dario Pedemonte, Argentina. And what do you get for $1.50?

Other notables include Enrique Roque Ramon Ocampo, Argentina, 0-24-2 and still going strong, Victor Adrian Britos, Argentina, 4-40-5 up until the time of his murder in 2005, Luis "Robocop" Cardozo, Colombia, not only with two losses to Jose Herley Zuniga Leal but also one to Jose Herley Zuniga Montano, and Douglas Oliveira, Brazil, who may well hold the record for the least amount of in-ring action in a career.

The biggest story in all of bumdom rolls on as 0-42 Alex Manea now stands a mere seven losses from the summit. Shout outs also to:

* Steve "Rhymes with Crumble" Trumble for producing some of the hottest Solo Boxeo swing bout action in many moons (gracias Bronc)

* Skyler Thompson for returning to action for the first time since racking up 5 wins in 17 days last January, to scrape past a 3-7-2 guy

* 23-0 Chase Shields for getting taken out in six by 6-26-5 Vance Garvey

* "Dangerous" Danny Wofford for tipping the scales at 300 pounds in his recent comeback fight, and getting DQ'd for "general lack of effort" with just 23 seconds left in his 4-rounder against Ray Lunsford

* Howard Clarke for picking up his 50th & 51st consecutive losses

* Jonathan Whiteman for bolstering his case for being the worst 5-win fighter in history with a TKO loss to 6-69-2 Jason Nesbitt

* Anton Glofak for continuing his good works by fighting an exhibition against 0-17-2 Jozef Gabris at a Slovakian children's home in April, before coming through with official career loss #70 in May. (In other Slovak boxing news, LP appears to be entering the bumkiller market with 34-year old Albanian Xhavit "Ushtar" Visoka, but he also seems to have a budding rival for the homeland's premium non-talent)

The Calloway hit parade continued last month with a KO win over a guy who once lost to Reggie. Best of all, though, the legend of Jeff Holcomb grew still larger last night with his MD4 loss to 9-43 Robert Marsh.

Shout outs also to Rudy Lopez, who in the space of eight months won the WBC featherweight title, then lost it, then got blown out on his home turf in March by a Japanese guy making a rare non-Korakuen Hall appearance, Jose Correa for somehow getting a WBA regional title shot after never having fought past 6 rounds before (and getting dominated by the highly unremarkable Edwin Vazquez), in addition to the dynamic Danish duo of Claus Bertino and Reda Zam Zam for getting destroyed by even less-remarkable opposition on the Kessler/Andrade undercard.

Rodney Spears. Lost a shutout UD to 7-28-2 Tyrone Jackson in 2004. Followed that up with an MD loss to 4-18-3 Donald Jenkins at a Hooters three months later. Lost another shutout UD to 0-15 Ernest Parfait at the Cut Off Youth Center in Cut Off, LA last summer. Current record: 0-22. Limit: the sky. (Thanks Dumpster.)

Kent Yellow Earings. After being felled by a low blow at the Buffalo Chip Campground in South Dakota in his only other pro bout, Yellow Earings recently surfaced two-and-a-half years later (and 39 pounds heavier), only to pack it in after one round of action against pro debutant Marc Saggese. (Set your watches for his heavyweight debut in October 2010, possibly against a 550-pound Butterbean.)

Stefan Stanko stepped into the ring today with a chance to pick up his fiftieth career loss. Unfortunately the man standing across from him was former IBU title challenger Zoltan Kiss Jr. and, well, five minutes and twenty-one seconds of boxing later, Stanko found himself with a record of 5-49. Kiss, meanwhile, is well on his way to compiling a ledger that compares favorably with the previously-discussed Mr. Holcomb's.

In related news, they don't seem to be making WBC Youth Title shots the way they used to, as Idiozan Matos and Gabriel Adoko can attest. (And, on the topic of bumkillers, shout outs to Paez Jr. for his nationally televised performance last night, too, which was well worth J.J. Corn's bout on the same card having to remain off-TV.)

Above you see the new record of Jose Carlos Amaral, who has now entered some rarified territory indeed; even the great Parlagi only managed to go 31 for his first 34. Alexandru Manea has now further advanced on some hallowed ground himself, picking up his first loss of 2007 last month, and 38th loss in 38 fights. Among the relative mortals, Marius Petre Sorin has moved to 0-28-1. Benjamin Robles Murry is now 1-29.

The rumor at ringside was that Cordova's visa expired at midnight and he had to head to nearby Ontario International Airport to catch a flight out of the country."

...got underway yesterday. The Great One moved to 2-67-7 with his second career loss to 8-36-5 Patrik Prokopecz in the lone pro bout on a "Sports Against Drugs" charity card in Štúrovo.

(Rumor has it that this was just step one in the buildup to a Glofak/Priest Smalls showdown at the LP Gym; Glofak, thus confronted by the forces of evil, would surely then bring his "A" game to the table and pick up that elusive 3rd win at last.)

(Rumor also has it that Johnny "Telefutura/Telemundo/Azteca America Swing Bout God" Romero may be hitting Youtube soon. You will be kept posted.)

One of the greatest Fightnews headlines ever. (At least since "Serin ready for Williams!")

"Cruiserweight Rob Calloway's opponent for the Titan Entertainment-promoted card at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph, MO on February 24th has been named. Calloway (60-7-1, 47 KOs) will be facing 41-year-old Buck "Tombstone" Smith (178-17-2, 118 KOs), who probably has more wins than any fighter since Archie Moore and Willie Pep retired.... Unfortunately none of them have come since 1997."

Evidently, quite a few. Wins over Rick Hardle also appear to be a plus (just ask Lee Cargle). (On a third note, exactly how many guys named Rodney Jones are out there?)

In other news: Ron Krull picked up not only a win, but a KO win the other day. That's not something you see every year. Nor is an SD4 loss to a 3-9-1 guy by a comebacking (?) Obed Sullivan.

Kicking things off with some great news

Jeff "Shogun" Holcomb, who has one of the greatest boxing records ever, is home on leave from Iraq and successfully defended his "NABC All Americas Cruiserweight Title" on January 2nd against Bobby Elkins, in one of the first bouts of 2007. Elkins had lost 13 straight fights, 12 of them by knockout, and his last win came at welterweight in March of 2000 against a guy with a record of 2-15. This was Holcomb's first ring appearance, meanwhile, since he dealt Danny Wofford his 101st career loss back in October of 2005.

This is going to be a great year for boxing.
